Congratulations to Mrs. Mary Neisler as this year's M19 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award winner!! Mrs. Neisler has been instrumental in developing innovative practices with respect to vocational skills for our young adults and students at MHS. From development and implementation of a school-wide coffee bar that is managed and run by our life skills students to initiating and maintaining relationships with a variety of community partnerships for our life skills students to receive job coaching and real life vocational practice, Mrs. Neisler has led the charge for our students to have greater experiences in the vocational area which has been valuable as they have transitioned to life after high school. Furthermore, she worked tirelessly with administration to develop a functional curriculum and program which is housed in our new LIFE House environment for our students who continue their education beyond their traditional four high school years. She has developed course work which focuses on increasing independence for successful transitions to supported independent living environments and workplace settings. Mrs. Neisler’s dedication to the students she serves goes far beyond the classroom. She has spent much of her time immersing herself in understanding and implementing transition plans, assessments, and goals and has provided additional training to her colleagues in the area of transition. To extend her knowledge and support even further, she developed a Transition Handbook which includes information, tips, and resources for parents to assist them and partner with them for the student’s success after high school. Families have often shared their utmost appreciation for the high expectations, opportunities, and support she has provided for their child/young adult. Congratulations and thank you for your dedication to our students, Mrs. Neisler!!! #19EveryStudent

2023 MHS FALL PLAY! 'Almost, Maine" is a play about love and longing, friendship and isolation, melancholy and hope. The setting is a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter in the mythical town of Almost, Maine. Propelled by the mystical energy of the Aurora Borealis and populated with characters who are humorous, plain-spoken, thoughtful, and sincere, "Almost, Maine" is a series of loosely connected tales about love, each with a compelling couple at its center, each with its own touch of magic. You don't want to miss it! The 2023 MHS Fall Play will be at 7:00 pm on November 17th and 18th in the MHS Auditorium. Tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for students at https://our.show/mhs-almostmaine2023 or $10 for adults and $8 for students at the box office the night of the event. The show runs about 1 hour and 30 minutes with a 10 minute intermission. For more information contact Mr. Erickson at ericksons@msd19.org

The MHS Parenting Class went to Hannah’s Playground this week. Michael Berndsen, father of Hannah, met with the class to discuss their family’s journey and discussed the medical needs that Hannah experienced during her short life. He discussed the process of how the playground, that is all inclusive, started and the significant help of the community that supported and financed the project. He then showed the students each part of the playground and the enjoyment every child can have when they visit from sensory, auditory, to handicap accessibility experiences. #MHSTheHighSchoolOfChoice

MHS Students went to Harris Stowe University to visit a Historically Black College and University. This college previously functioned and was built because of segregation. Students learn about the history of the school and what it has to offer as a potential school to attend as a student. Students took a tour with the Harris Stowe faculty and students and enjoyed lunch in the student dining halls. Students then went to the St. Louis Art Museum to experience Art from different continents, African American Art, and the limited-time exhibit on Hip Hop culture art. #MHSTheHighSchoolOfChoice
